It is the largest hydropower station in the world. It is jointly built by Brazil and Paraguay, and the generating units and generating capacity are divided equally between the two countries. At present, there are 18 generating units (700,000 kw each) with a total installed capacity of 12.6 million kW and an annual generating capacity of 79 billion KWH.

Itaipu means "singing stone" in Hindi. Itaipu hydropower Station was constructed on October 17, 1974 and completed on May 6, 1991, lasting for 17 years. The main dam is a hollow concrete gravity dam, 196 meters high (225 meters above sea level) and 1,500 meters long. The right side is connected with a curved concrete dam, 770 meters long. The spillway is connected to the left, the spillway is 483 meters long, and the maximum discharge capacity is 62,200 cubic meters per second. There is also a rockfill dam and earth dam on both sides. The whole dam is 7,853 meters long and the water level difference is 118.4 meters. The reservoir covers an area of 1,350 square kilometers (750 square kilometers on the Brazilian side and 600 square kilometers on the Paraguayan side) and has a capacity of 29 billion cubic meters.

Itaipu hydropower station project was consulted by San Francisco International Engineering Company and Milan Electric Power Consulting Company of Italy, and the master plan, diversion project, selection of hydro-generator set and other key designs were completed between 1971 and 1974. The generators are all made in Brazil by a Joint venture between Germany and Brazil. The governments of Brazil and Paraguay formed itaipu Joint venture company for the development of Itaipu hydropower station, which is responsible for construction, operation and management. The relevant agreements signed by the two governments have made clear provisions on the major issues of hydropower stations. Brazil and Paraguay have different power frequencies. The Brazilian and Paraguayan units use 60 hz and 50 hz, respectively. The high voltage AC transmission line is 750 kv. Paraguay currently consumes only 2% of the power generated by hydropower plants, so it is required to sell the surplus to Brazil for 50 years and is free to resell the remaining 48%. The Itaipu hydropower station is operated by the Furnas Central control unit.

Itaipu's joint venture is registered at $100m, with power companies of the two countries sharing half and half of the rights to the hydropower station. Construction is 99% financed by loans, which Brazil raises. The total investment in the construction of hydropower stations was us $23.4 billion, including 11.24 billion in engineering investment and 12.16 billion in interest expenditure. Under the agreement between the two governments, the hydropower station will pay off the principal and interest for 50 years (1974-2023) (still in dollars). In the meantime can borrow new debt to pay off old debt. The cost of servicing the principal and interest of the loan accounts for 70% of the management fee of the hydropower station.
