Brazil's major meat exports in the first five months of this year

Brazilian beef exports reached 176,000 tons in May, with export revenue of US $1.08 billion, according to data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) compiled by the Brazilian Association of Meat Export Enterprises (Abiec). Compared with the same period last year, sales volume was up 17.5 percent and revenue was 49.5 percent.

In the first five months of 2022, Brazilian beef exports reached 887,300 tons, up 25 percent year on year, while sales surged 55.9 percent to $5.06 billion. The sharp increase in exports was mainly due to a 24.7 per cent increase in the average selling price to $5,700 per tonne.

The top destinations for Brazilian beef exports in the first five months included China ($2.9 billion, up 91.3 percent year on year), the United States ($471 million, up 88 percent), Egypt ($255.8 million, up 345 percent) and the European Union ($212.8 million, up 29.4 percent).

Second, the pork

According to data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex), compiled by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), Brazilian pork exports totalled 89,300 tonnes in May, worth $204.3 million. Compared with the same period last year, sales volume was down 12.4 percent and export revenue was down 19.3 percent.

In the first five months of 2022, Brazil's pork exports totaled 416,600 tons, down 8.2 percent year on year, while export revenue fell 17 percent to $896.3 million.

In the first five months of this year, Brazil exported 27,300 tons of pork to China, 49.6 percent less than the same period before 2021. To the Philippines (334 percent to 9,000 tonnes), Singapore (122.1 percent to 7,300 tonnes), Argentina (63.3 percent to 3,900 tonnes) and Angola (40.8 percent to 3,600 tonnes) as of May.

Three, chicken

According to a report released by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) on June 14, chicken exports in May rose 3.7 percent year-on-year to 429,600 tons. Export revenue was $904 million, up 37.8 percent year on year.

"Strong foreign demand for chicken amid rising production costs amid global inflation has pushed the international average price above $2,000 per ton," the agency said.

Exports to China, the main destination for Brazilian exports, fell 8.8 per cent last month to 50,200 tonnes. This was followed by the UAE, Japan and the EU with exports of 44,800 tonnes (+73.2%), 33,100 tonnes (+3.2%) and 26,300 tonnes (+80.7%), respectively.

Brazil exported 1.9 million tons of chicken in January-May, up 7.8 percent from the same period in 2021. Export revenue rose 33.6 percent to $3.8 billion.
