Exporters: China's strong economic recovery is boosting demand for meat

Minerva SA, South America's largest meat exporter, says beef consumption in Chinese restaurants has almost fully recovered from the coVID-19 outbreak. Demand for food services in China has reached 90 percent of its pre-outbreak levels, with record passenger traffic at Chinese train stations, bus stations and airports, suggesting a strong economic recovery in the fourth quarter, said Fernando Galletti DE Queiroz, Minerva's executive President.

Queiroz said exports to China were expected to continue to rise as the country tended to stockpile food for New Year celebrations. China is a major importer of Brazilian beef, accounting for about 60 percent of Brazil's exports, while it bought 40 percent of Minerva's exports last year.

Queiroz said Chinese demand for beef will continue to grow, driven by African swine fever, urbanization and new dietary habits. This prompted Minerva to look for a new partner, he said, adding that a non-binding memorandum of understanding had been signed with a Chinese company to form a joint venture, but gave no further details.

Greenland, which is based in China, previously said in a statement that it had agreed to establish a joint venture with Minerva to expand its meat business. Greenland will use its distribution channels, retail chains and cold chain logistics to increase imports of South American beef. The group said the Minerva deal would bring meat imports to Rmb4bn over the next two years and aim to establish China's largest meat import hub, with imports exceeding Rmb10bn over five years.
